The great Greek physician and teacher Hippocrates (460 BC-370 BC) described several kinds of cancer, referring to them with the Greek word "carcinos", meaning crab or crayfish. This name comes from the appearance of the cut surface of a solid malignant tumor, with the "veins stretched out on all sides as the animal the crab has its feet, whence it derives its name."

I realized somewhere along the way that I could not do it all. In fact, I sometimes don't have the energy to work and live my life, which is why I'm so thrilled to now be semi-retired.

I actually had a savings account that I built up so that I could have a baby, but I finally came to terms with the fact that I wouldn't do it well by myself, so I bought a new car and went back to school. And those years that I spent getting into, through, and recovering from vet school were the years when I could have still had a baby. So it never happened.

But I shall always be grateful that I went back to school and got a profession!

Ah, be it what it is.....I was the fortunate "stay at home mom" who envied and admired the working mother. My best friend, who is now a grandmother, still feels guilty about being a working mom, but her children turned out as well as mine.

I was also one of those that believed we could do it all! But in my case it was also necessary. As a single mom, there was no way out other than going to work and school at night to further my career. I still have regrets of leaving my daughter to someone other than me. Tried to do what I thought best for us, and did what I could...schools closer to my jobs so that I could be there in case of er's and having afterschool programs at community centers next to the schools. Both of us tired would ride the Iron Horse home in the early evenings. And I relied on a group of friends and family that I could truly depend on. My life is more comfortable now and my daughter has her own family. With much love, she understands now the struggles and sent me a song today via Youtube..."I'll Always Love My Mama". Happy Mothers Day!

Happy Mother's Day to my sister -- dedicated and tireless mother and wife,
caring and gifted physician, devoted deerhound lover and inspiring blogger who despite all of the demands placed on her always had room for a hobby or two on the side! We all make choices and sacrifices and, in the end, hope to live up to our best potential and be a good role model for our children. I can say with certainty you have accomplished both. love, Pam

Not meaning to imply your medical student was going to do this. I also like to review records before seeing a patient, though I would say I usually uncover more from the patient and/or their family than what is in the record if they are available.

Our hospitalist group has a training module on documentation and we have been warned in team meetings about cutting and pasting our daily notes let alone others. I was seeing this was falling on deaf ears after continuing to see this in subsequent progress notes. Don't know if it is a cultural thing, or a techie thing. I did notify our person who sent the initial email out to let folks the why for this as I think it is not understood. It is disheartening to see either your own stuff copied into another person's note or to see the same thing copied day after day until the end of the stay. Not only is this unethical, it is dangerous.

I am one of the "geekier" members of our team (and a Boomer at that!) and cutting and pasting is a useful tool in the appropriate setting. Here's one of my fossil rants, we need to instill or have the ones following us retain the ethics around the use of technology in our lives whether it is around patient care, social media....

Bitter laugh "hah!" Rafe's maxims "Be kind, work hard," and "There are no shortcuts" have been replaced by public school administrators and California school boards' spin doctors into "Save money, cut corners" and "Hate teachers, teach others to hate teachers by blaming teachers to cover our own heinous mistakes."

How little the public realizes the true dedication of public school teachers, particularly in the current atmosphere of same. Public school teaching is self-regulatory in quality control: fully 25% remove themselves from the profession within five years' time. (In California, it's now closer to 40% due to intensive, unnecessary punitive measures against teachers. Does the public know that sales representatives can have teachers fired for deviated from a product script? The assumption is ESL students must be on the same page, date and time as those in the state's richest districts.) For those with more open minds, please read the four books Rafe Esquith has published on his profession and his own conclusions and methods. I'm thrilled he's documented these in books for generations to come. And thank you Mary Ann...
